Two Truths and a Lie Generator

The hardest part of two truths and a lie is thinking of something to say. Press New topic and you get a theme, like “places you’ve been” or “a talent you have”. Tell two true things and one lie about it, and everyone guesses the lie.

Add the players’ names and the tool shows whose turn it is.

How to use the Two Truths and a Lie Generator

  1. Add the players (optional).
  2. Press New topic.
  3. The player says three statements about the topic: two true and one made up.
  4. Everyone votes on which one is the lie, then the player reveals it.

Tips for a good lie

  • Make your lie believable and your truths a little surprising
  • Keep all three statements about the same length
  • Add one small detail to each so none stands out
  • For more icebreakers, try the icebreaker question generator

How the game works

Each player tells the group three statements about themselves: two are true and one is made up. Everyone else guesses which one is the lie. The fun is in the surprise: the true stories are often stranger than the lie. The topic generator solves the usual problem of blanking when it’s your turn by giving everyone a theme, like places you’ve been or a talent you have.

Examples to get you started

Topic: places you’ve been. “I’ve slept in an airport. I’ve been to three countries in one day. I’ve ridden a camel.” The group has to decide which story you made up.

Topic: a talent you have. “I can juggle. I can name every planet in order from the sun. I can whistle with my fingers.” A slightly unusual truth makes the lie harder to spot.

Scoring and rounds

  • Give one point to every player who spots the lie.
  • Give the speaker one point for each person they fooled.
  • Play one round per person, or two if the group is small.
  • Highest score at the end wins, or just play for fun.

Playing at work or in class

Two truths and a lie is one of the best-known icebreakers because it lets people choose how much they share. In a team meeting, keep to the Work deck so topics stay comfortable, and give people a minute to think before the first turn. In a classroom, the Kids deck uses simple themes like favorite animals and games. On a video call, ask people to post their three statements in the chat and run a quick poll for the vote.

Make the lie hard to spot

The best players keep all three statements the same length and add one small detail to each, so nothing stands out. They also pick a believable lie and a surprising truth. If you’re stuck, base the lie on something you nearly did, like a trip you almost took.
